Tremendous advances have been made in the field of science during the last century. Technology has been deployed to improve people’s quality of life, while science has been harnessed to address health, social and environmental challenges.
Despite all that has taken place, humanity remains perplexed by one element that can help unleash higher levels of innovation and well-being. This element is the inherent wealth found within the depth of human beings. It is the liberation of the human creative energy which can translate into success, well-being and happiness, affecting not just individuals but society as a whole.
This year, the forum hosts Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh who will share his inspiring story on overcoming challenges which seemed impossible to many. Dr Abu-Ghazaleh will reveal how he discovered his own creativity and faced his worst fears and crippling beliefs, before reaching exceptional levels of success which he achieved through unleashing the powers of his mind.
He will also talk about the role of communication in spreading, building on and utilising his journey to achieve a larger impact on societies.

The term “Reputation Management” has gained wide attention over the past few decades, occupying the top spot of strategic priorities in organisations from various sectors. In fact, many governments around the world have put in place special key indicators and reporting systems to measure their reputation and monitor the progress of government performance that can directly affect a country’s investment attractiveness and economic growth opportunities.
This session is about managing reputation in the wake of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rapid developments in communication technologies, most notably the rise of the popularity of ‘instant feedback loops’ made available through open digital networks. It will also address the fact that verbal communication can no longer impact reputation and perception unless coupled with on-the-ground action. This, in turn, calls for close, swift and continuous cooperation across all teams and disciplines within an entity.
Key Pillars:
- Reputation as a key factor in the growth and survival of organisations and economies alike
- Building reputation is not just a communication task, but a proactive and integrated culture that involves proper cooperation and coordination between the various disciplines within an organisation.
- Reputation is the final harvest reaped once the customer experience cycle is over.
- Success stories of entities integrating communication at the core of their work and in their customer experience and the impact this has on their overall reputation

This year, the forum will feature a session on the mysteries of the human mind - the product of nearly half a century of research into the realities of human capabilities in influencing lifestyle, health, happiness and overall well-being.
The session presents scientific facts about the human mind, information that remains unfamiliar to many. It also reveals the impact of ideas and beliefs on people’s physical health at a cellular level and their ability to influence their day-to-day realities, as well as the substantial impact changes in beliefs can have on the overall quality of people’s lives.
Physical and mental health challenges as a result of crippling beliefs acquired through life or inherited from predecessors are also discussed. In other words, the session concludes that the keys to solving such challenges lie within the human mind and are neither subjected to external circumstances nor to coincidences.

With global academic institutions, government entities and members of communities calling for greater tolerance and cross-cultural communication, questions around the role of media, particularly audio-visual, in enriching imagination, reviving cultural curiosity, encouraging learning, reducing intercultural differences and focusing on common points of interest in our modern society have taken central stage. At the same time, visual media can negatively affect societies by focusing on the differences rather than the similarities, which can lead to great misunderstanding between cultures.
This year, the forum will devote a special session to discussing the impact of visual media in all its forms, including films, Soap Operas and TV programmes, on international public opinion. The session will also explore ways to use the various media platforms to achieve effective communication across cultures.
Session Pillars:
- The importance of mutual cultural understanding in today’s world and the role of visual media in promoting such understanding across societies
- Examples of the influence of the digital revolution, as well as cable and online TV, in prompting cross-cultural understanding
- Television and film production as a double-edged sword (the dangers of promoting stereotypes and one-sided narratives)
- Areas of cooperation among visual media corporations that can help tackle challenges associated with cross-cultural understanding around the world

Over a century ago, culture became a central tool for communication strategists around the world. Cultural initiatives became increasingly popular in reaching out to various segments within a society and to other nations around the world.
Globalisation and the elimination of geographic boundaries on social media platforms encouraged entities to communicate their messages, offer their services and strengthen their relationships with customers and followers from around the world.
This coincided with an unprecedented global rise in cultural consumption, such as music and audio-visual content, making culture, with all its tools and channels, a high-impact infrastructure ready to be integrated into communication strategies.
As a result, this year’s forum sheds light on cross-cultural communication, emphasising ways in which the “story” of any given entity, project, product, or country, can be incorporated within the cultural fabric of societies, ensuring that it thrives and spreads in an organic manner.
Key Pillars:
- Understanding the essence of cross-cultural communication: tools, platforms, opportunities and challenges
- Cross-cultural communication as a means of incorporating an organisation’s 'story' into the consciousness of communities
- Cultural communication as an engine driving economic and social prosperity and strengthening reputation
- The impact of cross-cultural communication on culture itself

It is no secret that young people around the world spend most of their time on virtual platforms and social media networks. It is also no secret that this same category is the least receptive to government messaging, favouring instead the automatic exchange of ideas between peers from the same age group. Therefore, social media influencers and celebrities in the field of arts and sports have played a vital role in shaping youth’s awareness.
This is one of the main reasons behind seeing social media influencers gain prominence and emerge as major communication channels being employed by both governments and businesses to communicate with the youth.
This year, the forum will hold a special fireside chat with a number of key social media influencers and celebrities to discuss this popular phenomenon and how to make use of it both creatively and effectively in government communication strategies that foster behaviour change in societies.
Key Pillars:
- Understanding the psychology behind the ability of influencers, the talented and the artists to be close to people: credibility and trust
- Acknowledging the importance of cooperating with influencers who represent both the youth and adolescents. What are the opportunities and the challenges?
- How to properly and ethically employ influencers to spread awareness among the various groups in the society.
- Key future trends in collaborating with influencers. Sustainable relations
- Case studies: examples of global success stories in working with influencers as part of communication strategies

In examining the relationship between communication and well-being, and the role of communication in solving challenges faced by societies, this year, the International Government Communication Forum devotes one of its brainstorming labs to investigating communication solutions that can help solve six social phenomena that negatively affect the well-being of both individuals and communities. These phenomena include divorce, unemployment, domestic violence, negative health habits, road accidents and addiction in all its forms (drug addiction, online games, social media, etc.).
Key Pillars:
- How to move from awareness communication to values communication?
- What expectations do individuals have from both government and private sectors in terms of communicating about societal topics that are considered a priority?
- Examining a few examples of local campaigns that have already been launched and gathering ideas on how they can be improved so that their messages are as close as possible to reality and with a stronger impact on society
- From individuals’ point of view, what platforms and communication channels can governments make more use of in order to better communicate societal issues?
